If God Loves Me, Why Does He Allow So Much Suffering?

WHEN LIFE HURTS, WHERE IS GOD?

It's a question that often comes when life has hurt us in ways we never expected. Perhaps you've stood beside a hospital bed, buried someone you loved, watched innocent people suffer, or prayed desperately for something that never happened. You've heard that God is loving and all-powerful, and somewhere in your heart you've wondered why a God who could have stopped the pain allowed it to happen. It's a difficult question, and you deserve more than a quick religious answer.

When God created this world, suffering was never part of His desire for humanity. He created a world filled with life, beauty, love, and fellowship with Him. But humanity's decision to turn away from God opened the door to sin and its devastating consequences. We now live in a world where sickness, injustice, violence, and death touch even those who love God deeply. The Bible never asks us to pretend that these things are good.

What does God think about our suffering? Look at Jesus standing outside the tomb of His friend Lazarus. He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, yet John 11:35 tells us, "Jesus wept." He saw the grief surrounding Him, and His heart was moved. Those tears

reveal something beautiful about God. Our suffering matters to Him. He is not indifferent to the pain that fills this world.

And then consider the cross. Jesus entered the very world that had been broken by sin, experienced rejection and cruelty, and willingly suffered to rescue the people He loved. At Calvary, we see how far God's love was willing to go for humanity. The cross does not answer every question about why a particular tragedy happened, but it tells us something we desperately need to know: God has entered our suffering, and He is working to bring it to an end.

There is a day coming when suffering will no longer have a place in God's creation. Until then, Jesus invites us to bring our wounded hearts to Him. You may not understand everything that has happened in your life, and you may still have questions that seem impossible to answer. You can bring those questions to the One who wept at a graveside and gave His life so that death would not have the final word.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Has something painful in your life caused you to question God's love? What might change in your understanding of Him if you began looking at your suffering through the life and compassion of Jesus?

AN INVITATION TO KNOW JESUS

You don't have to hide your pain or pretend to understand it. Tell Jesus what hurts. Tell Him what you don't understand. Begin there, with the confidence that the Savior who wept with grieving people cares about what has brought tears to your eyes.
