What Is My Purpose, and What Happens When This Life Ends?

THERE MUST BE MORE THAN THIS

Life can become a familiar routine. We wake up, go to work, care for our families, meet responsibilities, and try to make room for the things we enjoy. Years pass, circumstances change, and somewhere along the way we may begin wondering what all of it means. We work hard to build a life, knowing that one day we will have to leave everything behind.

For some, these questions surface after achieving something they once believed would bring lasting fulfillment. For others, they come through grief. Standing beside the grave of someone you love has a way of making the ordinary concerns of life seem very small. Suddenly, questions about eternity become deeply personal. Is death the end of our story? Were we created simply to live for a few years and disappear?

The Bible begins with an extraordinary truth: humanity was created in the image of God. You are here because the Creator wanted human beings to experience life, love, fellowship, and a meaningful relationship with Him. Your existence has value that reaches beyond your accomplishments, possessions, or the number of years you live.

But sin brought death into the human experience, and with it came the sorrow of separation. Jesus entered our world to confront the very enemy that has caused humanity so much grief. When He stood before Martha after the death of her brother Lazarus, He made a promise that reaches far beyond that graveside: "I am the resurrection and the life."

Jesus demonstrated His authority over death when He called Lazarus from the tomb. Later, through His own death and resurrection, He secured the hope of eternal life for those who believe in Him. The Bible points us toward a future resurrection, when Christ returns and those who have died in Him will be raised to life.

That hope changes the way we understand our purpose today. Jesus invites us to know God, grow in His love, serve others, and live with the assurance that this present world is not the end of His plans for humanity. Our lives have meaning because we belong to the One who created us, redeemed us, and promises to make all things new.

You may still be discovering what God wants to accomplish through your particular gifts and experiences. Begin with the greater purpose He has already revealed: to know Him, love Him, and reflect His character in the way you live.

WHAT SCRIPTURE REVEALS

John 11:25 (NKJV)

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.'"

John 17:3 (NKJV)

"And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

If your worth is rooted in God's love rather than what you accomplish, how might that change the way you see your life? What would it mean to live today with the hope that Jesus has prepared a future beyond death?

AN INVITATION TO KNOW JESUS

Spend some time reading John 11:17–44. Picture Jesus standing with a grieving family and consider what His words reveal about God's power, compassion, and promises. Ask Him to help you discover the purpose He has for your life and the hope He offers beyond this world.
