What Are We That You Notice Us

"When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?" —PSALM 8:3-4 NKJV

The sheep are settled. The fire has burned low. David is flat on his back in the Judean wilderness, and above him the sky is doing what it always does out here — pulling the breath right out of you. No city glow. No noise. Just stars so thick they feel like they're pressing down. He has watched this sky a thousand nights. But tonight something breaks open in him. He sits up. He reaches for the words. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth...

He wasn't asking the question to feel small. He was asking it because he couldn't get over the answer. The God who flung galaxies into place, who set the moon in its orbit and scattered a hundred billion stars across the dark — that same God turns His attention to one shepherd boy lying in the grass. He is mindful of him. He visits him. That word means to come close. To show up. To arrive on purpose.

There are days when you feel invisible, overlooked, ordinary, like your life is too small to matter. David felt the vastness of the universe and instead of feeling swallowed by it, he felt found in it. The God who made all of that knows your name. He hasn't just noticed you from far away. He has come close. On purpose. Today.

Step outside tonight and look up — even for two minutes. Let the sky remind you how big He is, then let it remind you how near He is. Whisper if you need to: You are mindful of me. You came close. Thank You.

Scripture Promise:

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." — ROMANS 8:38-39 NKJV

Prayer:

Father, when I see Your creation, it reminds me how great You are and how blessed I am to get to see the beauty that still remains in this world that is marred by sin. Help me to always see You in all the good that surrounds me and to know that You are still in control.

Amen.
