How Lovely
"How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, even faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." — Psalm 84:1-2 · NKJV
The sons of Korah are pilgrims on the road to Jerusalem, and they are not there yet. They are still walking — through the Valley of Baca, through dry and difficult terrain — and the longing for the temple, for the presence of God, is almost physical. They describe the swallow finding a nest near the altar. Even the bird has found its place near God. They want what the bird has. They ache for it.
When's the last time you actually longed for God's presence? Not church attendance, not devotional habit — but genuine, soul-level aching for the nearness of the living God? The sons of Korah wrote this before they arrived. The longing itself was the gift. They hadn't gotten there yet, and the anticipation alone was almost too much to contain.
Access can make us casual. When the door is always open, we stop noticing how extraordinary it is that we're allowed in at all. The God of all creation — and the door is open. Let that mean something again today.
Before anything else today, tell God you want to want Him — that you're asking for the kind of longing this psalm describes. Let that desire itself be your opening prayer.
Scripture Promise:
"You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." —Psalm 16:11 · NKJV
Prayer:
In the busyness of everyday life, Father, help me to long for your presence. In Jesus' name I pray.
