When the Thunder Is His Voice

"The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty." — PSALM 29:3-4 · NKJV

A storm is rolling in off the Mediterranean, massive and fast, the kind that turns the sky a bruised purple-green before it hits. The thunder comes first, low and distant, then closer, then directly overhead, shaking the ground. Everyone around David runs for shelter. But David stands in it. Because he has heard something the others haven't. In the crack of the thunder, in the shaking of the cedar trees, in the whirl of the wind, he hears a voice he recognizes.

We spend a lot of energy trying to make God comfortable — keeping Him in the quiet, the gentle, the manageable. But Psalm 29 puts Him in the storm. The thunder is His voice. The lightning is His display. The same God who speaks in a still, small whisper also shakes the wilderness with a word.

Whatever storm is in your life right now, the one that feels out of control and too big and too loud — He is not absent from it. He is over it. His voice is in it. And the same God who commanded the thunder will speak peace over you when the moment is right.

The next time it storms — or even if you just hear wind today — stop for a moment and listen differently. Ask God: What are You saying to me in this season?

Scripture Promise:

"He calms the storm, so that its waves are still." —PSALM 107:29 · NKJV

Prayer:

Father, thank you for being in the storms of my life. When things feel out of control, I turn them over to you so that you can speak peace. In Jesus name I pray.

Amen.
