When the Famine Isn't for Bread
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.” — Amos 8:11, NKJV
Imagine having plenty to eat and still starving. The shelves are full, the table is set and there is water within reach, yet Amos describes a famine that none of those things can satisfy. It is a famine of hearing the words of the Lord. The people had repeatedly heard God speak through His prophets and repeatedly resisted Him. Amos warned that a day was coming when they would search for the word they had once ignored and would not find it.
There is something unsettlingly familiar about that picture. We live surrounded by words. News, opinions, podcasts, videos, messages and endless streams of information compete for our attention from the moment we wake up. Even spiritual content is available almost instantly. Yet having constant access to words about God is not the same as allowing the Word of God to reach our hearts. We can consume more information than any generation before us and still become spiritually hungry because the one voice we most need has been crowded out.
Then Jesus steps into the story and says, “I am the bread of life.” He does more than give us words from God; He is the Word who became flesh and came near. The deepest hunger of the human heart cannot be satisfied by another opinion, another distraction or even another religious activity. Our souls were created for Christ. When His voice becomes one among many instead of the voice that shapes all the others, spiritual hunger eventually follows.
Perhaps the danger is not that God has stopped speaking. Maybe we have become so accustomed to hearing everything else that we no longer recognize how hungry we are for Him. What if some of the restlessness you have been trying to satisfy is actually your soul asking to hear from Jesus again?
Create some quiet space today by turning down the voices that normally compete for your attention. Open God's Word and spend time listening to Christ without rushing to the next thing.
Scripture Promise:
“And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’” — John 6:35, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, help me to spend time in your presence becoming one with your word. Let it be the guide to my life and the nourishment for my soul. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
