I Will Pour Out My Spirit
“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh.” — Joel 2:28, NKJV
Joel spoke the promise generations before anyone gathered in that upper room. Then Pentecost came. The sound of a rushing mighty wind filled the house, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, and people who had once hidden behind closed doors began proclaiming Christ with a courage they could never have manufactured themselves. Peter recognized what was happening: God was fulfilling what He had promised through Joel.
Jesus had returned to the Father, but He had not abandoned His followers. He had promised that the Holy Spirit would come, and His disciples would not have to carry out His mission through human strength alone. The same Peter who once denied knowing Jesus would now stand publicly and proclaim Him.
We sometimes try to live the Christian life as though everything depends upon our determination. We try harder to become patient, courageous, faithful and loving until we eventually encounter the limits of our own strength. Christ never intended for us to follow Him that way. The Holy Spirit convicts, teaches, comforts, guides and forms the character of Christ within surrendered hearts. Perhaps the question is not whether you need to try harder, but whether you have been trying to do without God's Spirit what only His Spirit can accomplish in you.
Before tackling everything in your own strength today, consciously invite the Holy Spirit to lead your thoughts, responses, decisions and interactions.
Scripture Promise:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” — Acts 1:8, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, let your Holy Spirit be the strength in my life. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
