Turn With All Your Heart

“Now, therefore,” says the LORD, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” — Joel 2:12, NKJV

The people could tear their garments, fast and weep publicly, and all of it could look like repentance. Yet God wanted something deeper than outward evidence. Through Joel, He told them to rend their hearts rather than their garments. He was calling His people beyond the appearance of change into the place where genuine transformation begins.

Jesus encountered the same problem centuries later. He met people who could appear righteous while remaining unchanged within, and He continually moved beyond appearances to address the heart. We can become skilled at looking spiritually healthy too. We know how to worship, what words to use when we pray and how to keep serving even when something inside us has quietly moved away from God.

The beautiful part of Joel's message is that the God who sees beneath the surface still says, “Turn to Me.” He is not exposing the heart so He can push us away; He is inviting us back because He is gracious and merciful. True repentance is more than feeling badly about what we have done. It is turning toward the God we have wounded and discovering that His heart is still open to us. God does not simply want you to behave differently. He wants your heart back.

Ask God to show you where outward spiritual habits may have continued while your heart has grown distant. Give Him permission to work beneath the surface.
