The One They Pierced
“Then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son.” — Zechariah 12:10, NKJV
The hands that had touched lepers, blessed children, opened blind eyes, and lifted broken people from despair were now stretched across a wooden cross. Nails were driven through them, fastening the Savior to the instrument of His execution. Centuries earlier, Zechariah had spoken of the One who would be pierced. Now the prophecy was unfolding before a crowd that could scarcely comprehend who was suffering in their midst. The Creator of humanity had allowed Himself to be wounded by the very people He came to redeem.
Try to imagine the love that held Jesus there. He had the power to silence His accusers, stop the soldiers, and walk away from the suffering. Yet He remained. He heard the mocking voices, saw the grief of those who loved Him, and endured the agony of separation brought about by sin. Even then, His concern extended toward others. He prayed for those responsible for His crucifixion and made provision for His mother. His suffering revealed the extraordinary depth of a love humanity had neither earned nor fully understood.
We have heard the story of Calvary so often that it can become familiar enough to lose some of its power over our hearts. But the cross deserves more than a passing thought. When you look upon the One who was pierced, do you see only what Jesus suffered, or do you recognize how deeply He must love you to have remained there? His wounds tell the story of a Savior who considered your redemption worth the cost. That love invites a response far deeper than gratitude spoken with our lips. It calls us to give Him our hearts.
Spend time today reflecting on the suffering Jesus willingly endured for your salvation. Thank Him personally for His love, and ask Him to help you respond with a life increasingly surrendered to Him.
Scripture Promise:
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, thank you for giving your only son to die for our sins. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
