Consider Your Ways

“Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Consider your ways!’” — Haggai 1:5, NKJV

The people had returned from captivity with the opportunity to rebuild the temple, the place that represented God's presence among them. They began the work, but opposition and discouragement interrupted their progress. As the years passed, their attention shifted toward building their own homes and establishing comfortable lives. The temple remained unfinished. Through Haggai, God asked them to consider their ways. They had made room for their personal interests while allowing the work connected to His worship to remain neglected.

Their experience reaches uncomfortably close to our own. We make time for the responsibilities that demand our attention, the people who depend upon us, and the goals we hope to accomplish. Those things may all have legitimate places in our lives. Yet somewhere between our commitments and our ambitions, time with Jesus can become something we intend to get around to later. We continue asking God to bless our plans while giving Him little opportunity to shape them. Jesus once visited a home where Martha was distracted by much serving while Mary sat at His feet. Martha's work mattered, but Jesus gently reminded her that Mary had chosen what was most needed.

God's message through Haggai was an invitation to examine what their choices revealed about their priorities. That same invitation reaches us today. Could it be that our lives have become so full of things we consider important that we've left little room for the One who gives those things their true meaning? Jesus wants more than a brief place in an overcrowded schedule. He desires the relationship from which every other part of our lives finds its proper direction.

Look honestly at how your time and attention are divided. Choose one practical adjustment that will give Jesus a more intentional place in your daily life, and begin making that change today.

Scripture Promise:

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33, NKJV

Prayer:

Father, help me to seek you early in the morning, before the noise of the day closes in. But if I don't seek you early lord, let the day not close without spending time in your presence. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
