Wake Up

“I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and punish the men who are settled in complacency.”
— Zephaniah 1:12, NKJV

Picture someone moving through the streets of Jerusalem with a lamp, searching every dark corner. That is the image God used through Zephaniah as He warned His people about the condition of their hearts. They had become comfortable in their spiritual indifference, living as though God would neither intervene nor hold them accountable. They were not necessarily denying His existence. They had simply reached a place where His presence no longer made much difference in how they lived.

That possibility should trouble us. A person can know the language of faith, attend worship faithfully, and participate in church activities while slowly becoming distant from Jesus. Familiarity with spiritual things can sometimes hide the absence of genuine communion with God. The religious leaders of Jesus' day knew the Scriptures and observed their traditions, yet many failed to recognize the Messiah standing before them. Their knowledge had not produced the relationship God desired. Jesus longed to gather His people to Himself, but many were unwilling to come.

The most dangerous part of spiritual complacency is that we may not recognize it while it is happening. We can become satisfied with knowing about God while neglecting the daily experience of walking with Him. If Jesus searched the quiet corners of your heart today, would He find a relationship that is growing or one that has been surviving on yesterday's experiences? His call to awaken is an expression of His love. He desires something far richer for us than a life of religious routine. He wants our hearts.

Ask Jesus to search your heart and reveal where your relationship with Him has become routine or neglected. Respond to what He shows you by making a deliberate return to meaningful time in His presence.

Scripture Promise:

“Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” — Ephesians 5:14, NKJV
