God Has Not Looked Away

“The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked.”
— Nahum 1:3, NKJV

The people of Nineveh had once responded to Jonah's warning with repentance, and God had shown them mercy. But generations later, the nation had returned to violence, cruelty, and oppression. Through Nahum, God announced that their wickedness would not continue without judgment. For those who had suffered under Assyria's power, the message carried an assurance they desperately needed: God had seen what was happening. The cries of the oppressed had not escaped His attention, and those who believed themselves untouchable would one day answer to Him.

It's difficult to watch injustice flourish while those responsible seem to suffer no consequences. We see people mistreated, the vulnerable exploited, and innocent lives damaged by the choices of others. Sometimes the silence of heaven can feel almost unbearable. Yet God's patience should never be confused with His approval. Jesus revealed the same God Nahum described. He defended the vulnerable, confronted hypocrisy, and spoke with unmistakable seriousness about judgment. Still, He wept over Jerusalem and extended mercy to sinners willing to repent. His heart was grieved by the destruction sin brings to the people He created.

The cross brings God's justice and mercy into sharpest focus. Sin was serious enough that Jesus gave His life to save us from its consequences, and His love was great enough that He willingly bore our guilt. We serve a God who refuses to treat evil as harmless because He knows what it does to those He loves. When injustice makes you question whether God cares, will you remember that the same Jesus who died for sinners also promises to bring every hidden wrong into the light? We can entrust judgment to Him while allowing His compassion to shape how we treat those who suffer.

Think of someone who is suffering because of injustice or mistreatment. Ask Jesus to show you a practical way to demonstrate His compassion, while entrusting the final judgment of evil to Him.

Scripture Promise:

“He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” — Psalm 37:6, NKJV

Prayer:

Father, help me to be a blessing to someone in need, and to show your love and compassion towards others. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
