The Pride God Can See
“The pride of your heart has deceived you.” — Obadiah 3, NKJV
Edom felt secure in its rocky strongholds. From high above the surrounding land, the people could look down and wonder who could possibly bring them down. Their position created confidence, and confidence eventually became pride. They believed their security made them untouchable, but God saw something they could not: the very thing making them feel safe was deceiving them.
Pride is dangerous because it rarely introduces itself by name. Sometimes it sounds like independence: I can handle this myself. Sometimes it appears as comparison: At least I'm not like them. It can even hide inside spirituality when we begin believing our faithfulness makes us better than someone else. Jesus shows us another way. The One who possessed all authority humbled Himself, washed feet, welcomed children, touched those others avoided and ultimately lowered Himself all the way to the cross.
If Christ could stoop, what are we protecting when we refuse to? Obadiah reminds us that elevation becomes dangerous when it convinces us that we no longer need God. The safest place is not the highest position we can reach, but the place where our hearts remain humble enough to depend upon Him.
Ask God to reveal any area where confidence has quietly become self-sufficiency or pride. Choose humility where you would normally defend, compare or elevate yourself.
Scripture Promise:
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, humble me when I lift myself up. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
