Love That Won't Let Go

Anchor Scripture (Hosea 3:1, NKJV)
Then the Lord said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just as the Lord loves the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love the raisin cakes of the pagans."

You've loved someone who kept leaving.

Maybe it was a marriage. Maybe a friend who took and took until there was nothing left to take, or a child who used your love as a launching pad to walk further away, or a version of yourself you keep forgiving for the same failure. You know the particular exhaustion of loving someone who doesn't love you back the same way, and staying anyway, and wondering if staying makes you strong or just makes you a fool.

Hosea knew that exhaustion before you did. God told him to marry a woman named Gomer, and she left him for other men, sold herself the way you sell something you no longer value. And when she was at her lowest, standing on an auction block, God's instruction to Hosea wasn't divorce papers. It was go buy her back.

Hosea walked into that marketplace and paid silver and barley for his own wife. He put the ring back on the hand that had already broken his heart once.

This is what it costs God to love Israel, and what it costs him to love you. Not admiration from a distance. Redemption, purchased, at a price he chose to pay himself, for people who ran the other direction and kept running.

You are not the fool for staying. You are living the oldest love story there is, and it has your name in it.

Think of one relationship where love has cost you more than it's returned. Ask God what it would look like to keep loving there the way he loved Israel, without losing yourself in the process.

Scripture Promise:
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8, NKJV)

Prayer:

Father, thank you for the gift of love. Please help me to love others when circumstances make it difficult to do so. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
