What Are You Doing Here?
“And suddenly, a voice came to him, and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’”
— 1 Kings 19:13, NKJV
Yesterday Elijah stood on Mount Carmel and watched fire fall from heaven.
Today he is hiding in a cave.
Jezebel’s threat keeps replaying in his mind. Somehow one angry voice has become louder than the God who answered by fire. Exhausted and afraid, Elijah runs until there is nowhere left to run.
Then God asks, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
God knows why Elijah is there. The question invites Elijah to recognize what fear has done to him.
We have caves too. Some are made of isolation, disappointment, exhaustion, shame, or fear. We retreat because hiding feels safer than facing what is outside. Eventually we can become so comfortable there that we stop asking whether God ever intended us to remain.
Jesus doesn’t shame discouraged people. He meets them. Yet His presence also calls them forward.
Maybe God’s question is reaching into your hiding place today:
What are you doing here?
Ask God whether fear or discouragement has driven you somewhere He never intended you to stay. Let Christ meet you there, then follow Him forward.

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God.” — Isaiah 41:10, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, help me to search within to see where fear has me crippled. Teach me how to release it and trust that you will work all thing out according to your plans for my life. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
