How Long, Lord?
“O LORD, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You, ‘Violence!’ And You will not save.” — Habakkuk 1:2, NKJV
Habakkuk looks around and sees violence, injustice, conflict, and destruction. Wrong seems to be winning while God appears silent.
He has prayed. He has waited. Nothing around him seems to change.
Finally, the question comes out: “How long?”
Some prayers eventually reach those two words. How long before this grief becomes lighter? How long before my child comes home? How long before the door opens? How long before healing comes? How long before You answer me, God?
Habakkuk does something important with his frustration. He takes it to God.
He does not pretend to understand. He does not dress his confusion in religious language. He stays in conversation with the One he is struggling to understand.
Then God answers: “Look among the nations and watch... For I will work a work in your days Which you would not believe, though it were told you.”
While Habakkuk is asking where God is, God is already working beyond what the prophet can see.
The disciples experienced something similar after Jesus died. Saturday must have felt unbearably silent. They could see the tomb, but they could not see what God was doing. Sunday was already on its way.
God’s silence is not proof of God’s absence.
So bring Him the question. Bring Him the frustration. Bring Him the part you cannot reconcile. But keep bringing it to Him.
What if the silence you have interpreted as inactivity is hiding work only God can presently see?
Tell God honestly where you have been asking, “How long?” Resist the temptation to withdraw from Him because you do not understand Him. Stay close while you wait.
Scripture Promise:
“The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him.” — Lamentations 3:25, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, scripture tells us that those who wait on you will have their strength renewed. When things are falling around me, help me to trust in you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
