Small Doesn’t Mean Insignificant
“For who has despised the day of small things?” — Zechariah 4:10, NKJV
The foundation is there, but compared with what once stood in Jerusalem, the rebuilding effort seems painfully small.
Some people remember Solomon’s magnificent temple. They remember what used to be. Now they are looking at an unfinished beginning, and comparison is stealing the joy from what God is doing in front of them.
Then God asks, “Who has despised the day of small things?”
We understand that temptation. We look at the beginning of something God is growing and compare it with somebody else’s finished story. The prayer habit is only a few days old. The relationship is only beginning to heal. The ministry is small. Progress is slow. We expected something that looked more impressive.
But Scripture repeatedly shows us a God who is comfortable beginning small.
A mustard seed. A shepherd boy. Five loaves and two fish. A baby lying in a manger in a town called Bethlehem.
The salvation of the world entered history so quietly that most people slept through the night.
Jesus reminds us that small is not the same as insignificant when God is involved. What matters is not how impressive the beginning looks. What matters is whose hands are shaping it.
Maybe you have been discouraged because something is not growing fast enough for you. But what if God is asking you to stop measuring and start tending?
Could you be despising something small that God has every intention of growing?
Identify one small beginning you have been tempted to dismiss. Give it faithful attention today and resist comparing its beginning with someone else’s maturity.

“He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 1:6, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, thank you for even the small things, because those are the thing that actually allow me to stop and take a closer look. Lord open my eyes so that I may see the works of your hand. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
