Before the Lions
“He knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.” — Daniel 6:10, NKJV
The decree has been signed. Daniel knows exactly what it means. For thirty days, anyone who petitions any god or man except the king will be thrown into the lions’ den.
Daniel goes home.
He opens the windows toward Jerusalem, kneels, and prays.
But tucked inside the verse is a phrase that tells us why Daniel can face this moment: “as was his custom since early days.”
Daniel does not suddenly build a prayer life because lions are waiting. Long before the decree, before the conspiracy, before anyone was watching his windows, Daniel had already learned where to go when he needed God. The crisis simply reveals the relationship that was already there.
Jesus lived with that same rhythm. Before major decisions, after exhausting ministry, and as the cross drew near, He withdrew to pray. Communion with His Father was woven into His life.
We often admire Daniel’s courage while overlooking Daniel’s consistency. We want faith strong enough for the lions without building the habits that strengthen faith before the lions ever appear.
The quiet moments with Jesus matter more than we realize. Every prayer, every opened Bible, every choice to seek Him when there is no crisis is building something inside us.
What are you building with God today that will still be standing when pressure comes?
Protect a consistent time with God. Do not wait for a crisis to make prayer urgent. Build the relationship now that you will need then.
Scripture Promise:
“The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, help me to desire to spend more time in your presence so that when trials comes, I have the assurance that you will see me through them. Thank you for your abiding love. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
