The Pit
“So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah... And Jeremiah sank in the mire.” — Jeremiah 38:6, NKJV
The ropes lower Jeremiah into darkness. There is no water at the bottom of the cistern, only thick mud. His feet sink into it, and soon he is sitting helplessly in the mire.
His crime is faithfulness.
Jeremiah has delivered the message God gave him, and people do not want to hear it. Now obedience has placed him at the bottom of a pit.
There are moments when following God can leave us wondering whether doing the right thing was worth what it cost. You tell the truth and lose the relationship. You honor your conviction and lose the opportunity. You obey God and somehow find yourself in a place that feels nothing like reward.
Jesus understands that road. Perfect obedience led Him through rejection, betrayal, false accusation, and eventually to a cross. The suffering did not mean the Father had lost control of the story.
Neither does your pit.
Jeremiah cannot climb out by himself, but God has not forgotten him. Ebed-Melech speaks to the king, gathers men, brings ropes, and pulls Jeremiah from the mud.
The pit is part of Jeremiah’s story. It is not the end of it.
Maybe you have been interpreting a difficult place as evidence that God abandoned you. But what if faithfulness brought you there, and God is still writing what comes next?
Can you trust Jesus in a place you never expected obedience to take you?
If doing what is right has left you discouraged, resist the temptation to abandon your conviction. Ask Christ for strength to remain faithful while you wait for Him to write the next part of the story.

Father, when I am weak, help me to find my strength in You. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
