The Plumb Line
“Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel.” — Amos 7:8, NKJV
A builder holds a cord against a wall and lets the weight fall. Slowly the line becomes perfectly straight. From across the room, the wall may have looked fine. Standing beside the plumb line, the lean is impossible to miss.
That is the picture God gives Amos.
Israel has become comfortable measuring itself by its own standards. God places His standard beside them and reveals what they have stopped noticing.
Comparison can do the same thing to us. We look at someone else’s choices and reassure ourselves that we are doing better. We measure our attitudes against theirs, our habits against theirs, even our spirituality against theirs. Given enough comparison, almost anything can begin to look straight.
Then Jesus steps beside the wall.
His compassion confronts our indifference. His forgiveness exposes the grudges we defend. His humility challenges our pride. His obedience to the Father reaches into the places where we continue negotiating with God.
Suddenly the question is no longer, Am I doing better than someone else? The question becomes, Am I becoming more like Jesus?
The beautiful part of the gospel is that Christ does more than reveal what is crooked. When we surrender to Him, He begins changing us. The same Jesus who exposes what needs to change also supplies the grace that transforms us.
What have you been calling straight simply because you stopped measuring it against Christ?
Choose one area of your life where comparison has made you comfortable. Place it beside the life and teachings of Jesus, and ask Him to bring you back into alignment with Him.

Prayer:
Father, when I think to measure myself against others, let me remember that it is Jesus I must look to. He is the author and finisher of my faith. It is only Him that I must become like. By your grace I will, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.
