The Worship God Chooses
“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?” — Isaiah 58:6, NKJV
Imagine the scene Isaiah describes. People are fasting. Heads are bowed. Sackcloth lies beneath them. They have denied themselves food and gone through the outward motions of seeking God, yet one question continues troubling them: Why does God seem unmoved by our worship?
Then God points beyond their fasting to the lives around them.
People are still being mistreated. Burdens remain heavy. The hungry are still hungry, and the hurting remain unseen. Their worship has reached the sanctuary, but it has not reached their neighbor.
Jesus lived the worship Isaiah describes. He spent time alone with His Father, but He never remained removed from human need. He touched lepers, noticed people others ignored, fed hungry crowds, defended the vulnerable, and stopped for people everyone else was walking past. His communion with His Father made Him more attentive to people, not less.
That challenges us because it is possible to leave worship feeling spiritually full while remaining untouched by someone else’s pain. We can ask God to answer our prayers while ignoring the opportunity He has placed in front of us to become part of an answer for someone else.
God wants worship that leaves evidence behind.
Who should experience more of the love of Jesus because you spent time with Him today?
Look beyond your own needs today. Ask Jesus to show you one burden you can help lighten, one person you can encourage, or one need you can quietly meet.
Scripture Promise:
“Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’” — Isaiah 58:9, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, let my worship of you be reflected in how I help others in need. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
