Close Lips, Distant Heart
“Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me.” — Isaiah 29:13, NKJV
The words still come easily. The prayers sound right. Worship continues. Scripture is familiar. From the outside, nothing appears to have changed.
But God sees something nobody else can see. The heart has moved.
That is what makes Isaiah’s warning so unsettling. These are not people who have stopped talking about God. They still know how to honor Him with their lips. Their problem is hidden beneath everything that looks spiritual: they have learned how to remain religious while becoming distant from the One they worship.
Jesus later repeats Isaiah’s words when confronting religious leaders who knew Scripture and understood religious practice, yet had allowed tradition to take the place of genuine devotion. Their mouths were close to God while their hearts were somewhere else.
That distance can happen quietly in us too. We can keep praying while prayer becomes something we finish rather than somewhere we meet God. We can read Scripture without allowing it to search us. We can sing about Jesus while losing the tenderness we once felt toward Him.
And still Christ calls us closer. He wants more than familiar words. He wants us.
Maybe the most important question today is not whether you still believe in God. Perhaps it is something much more personal:
Is Jesus still close to your heart, or have you simply become good at looking close to Him?
Step away from religious routine long enough to examine your relationship with Christ. Ask Him to reveal where familiarity may have replaced intimacy, then respond honestly to whatever He shows you.Scripture Promise:
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, show me when my worship is more lip service than a heart that is wholly thine. Then teach me to respond in love. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
