The Cracked Container
“They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.” — Jeremiah 2:13, NKJV
Imagine carrying a cracked container beneath a hot sun. You fill it. Walk a little farther. Look inside. Empty. So you return and fill it again.
Jeremiah says God’s people have done something even more heartbreaking. They walked away from a flowing fountain and chose broken containers that could never satisfy them.
We still do it.
We pour ourselves into achievement, approval, possessions, relationships, entertainment, and even ministry, hoping something will finally quiet the thirst inside. Some of those things may be good, but they were never meant to take the place of God.
Then Jesus stands before thirsty people and says, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.”
Come to Me.
Jesus does not merely offer us something to make life feel fuller. He offers Himself. Yet we can spend years asking Christ to bless the broken cisterns we keep returning to instead of allowing Him to become our fountain.
What are you repeatedly running to for something only Jesus can give you?
Pay attention to where you turn first when you feel empty, anxious, lonely, or discouraged. Before reaching for your usual source of comfort, turn to Christ.
Scripture Promise:
“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst.” — John 4:14, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, help me to recognize when I am more focused on things, even if those things are for the ministry, rather than to being focused on you. Teach me to recalibrate and turn my focus to you. The only one who can guide me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
