Yet
“Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” — Habakkuk 3:18, NKJV
Walk slowly through Habakkuk’s final picture.
The fig tree is bare. No fruit hangs from the vines. The olive crop has failed. The fields produce no food. The sheep have disappeared from the fold, and the cattle stalls stand empty.
Everything the people would normally point to as evidence of God’s blessing is gone.
Habakkuk sees all of it.
Then he says one word that changes the direction of the passage: Yet.
“Yet I will rejoice in the LORD.”
At the beginning of the book, Habakkuk is asking God why. He wants answers. He wants circumstances to make sense. By the end, many of those circumstances remain unresolved, but something has changed inside the prophet.
He has learned to separate God’s character from his circumstances.
That is where September’s journey through the prophets has been leading us. Samuel taught us to listen. Joel called us to return. Isaiah confronted our worship. Elijah asked us to choose. Jeremiah showed us the cost of faithfulness. Daniel taught us to trust God even in the fire. Now Habakkuk brings us to a question that reaches beneath all of it.
Is God enough?
Jesus is the clearest answer God has ever given to that question. In Christ we have forgiveness, reconciliation with God, resurrection hope, and eternal life. Circumstances may change. The fig tree may not blossom. But Jesus remains.
There will be seasons when praise comes easily because blessings are everywhere. There may also be seasons when our hands feel empty. Those seasons reveal what our hearts have been holding.
If everything you normally thank God for disappeared, would Jesus still be enough?
Before thanking God for anything He has given you today, worship Him for who He is. Thank Jesus for His presence, His grace, His cross, His resurrection, and the salvation you have in Him.
Scripture Promise:
“The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.” — Habakkuk 3:19, NKJV
Prayer:
Father, thank you for being all I've needed and ever will need. You are enough. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
