Even the Wind Knows His Name.

Peace that doesn't wait for the storm to stop

"Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be still!' And the wind ceased and there was a great calm." — Mark 4:39 (NKJV)

It was the kind of storm that professional fishermen remembered for the rest of their lives. It wasn't a squall, it was a fury. Water coming over the sides of the boat in sheets, the hull groaning, the sky and sea fusing into the same black violence. These were men who had grown up on this lake. When they said we are perishing, they knew exactly what perishing looked like.

And Jesus was asleep. On a cushion, in the stern — the back of the boat, which was the most exposed place. He was sleeping through wind that was stripping the sails. They shook Him awake: Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? It's the most human sentence in the whole story. Not Lord, please help. But do You not care? It was fear with a wound in it.

He stood up. He looked at the storm I imagine you look at something that has forgotten its place. Then He spoke. It wasn't a prayer, or a plea, but a command. At the command Peace b e still, the wind stopped. It was similar to the the way a dog stops when its owner's voice cuts through the noise. Immediately and completely. The lake stood still like glass.

The disciples were more afraid after the calm than during the storm. Because now they weren't just in a boat in bad weather — they were standing next to someone who spoke and creation obeyed. Who is this? They had been following Him for weeks, but the storm had just introduced them to someone they hadn't fully met yet.

Write down the storm you're inside right now — the one keeping you awake, the one you can't stop rehearsing. Underneath it write: He is in this boat. Now ask Him for something harder than calming the water: ask Him to calm you. Sometimes God stills the storm. Sometimes He stills the one standing in it. Both are miracles.

Scripture Promise:

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." — Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)

Prayer:

Father, I am so glad that you are able to speak to the winds and the waves in my life. Thank you for keeping control. Help me to know you more because of this. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
