You've Already Been Thinking About It.
The interior life is where the real battle is fought — Matthew 5:22
"But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment." — Matthew 5:22 (NKJV)
He had just said He had not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. And then He started raising the standard in a way that made everyone realize the law they thought they had kept had never been asking what they thought it was asking. You have heard it said, do not murder. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother without cause is already in danger of judgment.
He did the same with adultery. You have heard it said, do not commit adultery. But I say to you, whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. He was relocating the battlefield. Moving it from behavior, which is visible, manageable, auditable — to intention. To the thought that produces the behavior, to the interior life that no one else can see. And He was saying: that is where the law has always been aimed. You just forgot to read it that deep.
This makes people uncomfortable because you can manage behavior. You can track actions and produce a clean external record. But the interior life, the anger you've been marinating in for weeks, the imagination that goes places you'd be embarrassed to name. Even the narrative you've been running in private about the person who hurt you, that is harder to audit and easier to excuse. Because it hasn't become anything yet. Nobody can see it. It's just a thought.
But Jesus took it to the level it was always meant to be. He says the thought is already something. The anger is already something. The interior life is the real one, the place where character is actually formed, where sin is conceived, and where transformation actually begins. He doesn't name the inner battle to shame you. He names it because the inner battle is where He wants to be. You can clean the outside of the cup, or you can invite Him into the inside. He is asking us to allow Him to clean the inside.
Identify one interior pattern you haven't brought to God yet. A resentment you keep returning to, a thought you've been entertaining, or even a story you've been building in private about someone who hurt you. Bring it today. It may not be visible yet. But left unaddressed, it will.

Father, help me anything that I am trying to hide from you and allow your Holy Spirit to cleanse me from the inside. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
