One Thing Is Lacking.
What you won't release is quietly running you — Mark 10:21
"Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, 'One thing you lack...'" — Mark 10:21 (NKJV)
Dust settled around the man's feet as he knelt before Jesus.
His question came quickly, almost urgently. "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He had lived an upright life, kept the commandments, and earned the respect of those around him. Yet something inside him still felt unfinished. Have you ever had that feeling?
Then came the moment that changes the entire story.
Jesus looked at him......and loved him.
Before Jesus exposed what was holding him back, He loved him. Before the invitation to surrender came, there was compassion in His eyes.
"One thing you lack..."
Jesus wasn't trying to take something from him. He was trying to free him from the one thing that had quietly taken hold of his heart. The invitation wasn't simply to let go of wealth, it was to follow Christ without anything competing for first place.
The same loving gaze rests on us today. Jesus still points to the places we've held too tightly and it is not to shame us. It is to set us free. Whatever we refuse to surrender will eventually shape our choices, direct our hearts, and compete with our devotion to Him.
Remember, love tells the truth. And the truth always points us toward freedom.
Ask the Lord, "Is there anything I've been holding more tightly than You?" Listen without defending yourself. If He reveals something, trust that His invitation to surrender comes from love, not condemnation. And then surrender it to Him.
Scripture Promise (NKJV)
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." — Matthew 6:21
