"Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her." —Luke 10:41, 42 (NKJV)
I understand Martha. I really do. She was doing good things — serving, preparing, making sure everyone was taken care of. There was nothing wrong with what she was doing. It was the worried, troubled place she was doing it from that Jesus gently called out.
Busyness has a way of feeling like faithfulness. If I'm doing a lot for God, surely that counts as being close to Him. But activity and intimacy aren't the same thing. You can fill every hour with good work and still feel distant from the One you're working for.
Mary chose to just be there. Not performing, not producing, just present. And Jesus said that was the better thing. Not because the work didn't matter, but the relationship has to come first. Everything we do for God flows better when it comes from time actually spent with Him.
Surrendering busyness doesn't mean doing less. It's simply making sure that in all the doing, you're not drifting from the One who matters most.
Somewhere in your day today, put the to-do list down and simply sit with God. No agenda. No requests. Just be with Him the way Mary was — and let that be enough.
Scripture promise:
"Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10
Prayer:
Father, help me to slow down and stop being so focused on doing things for you, that I forget to do things with you.
Amen.
