WHEN WE TRY TO BUILD OUR OWN WAY UP

"Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves." — Genesis 11:4

They had one language, one purpose, and one deeply misguided goal: to build their way to God. To make themselves so impressive, so tall, so notable that they would never need to be scattered, never need to feel small again. The tower of Babel is one of the oldest stories in human history — and one of the most current.

Because we are still building towers. Career towers. Status towers. Social media towers. Towers of achievement stacked so high we hope no one will see how insecure we really are at the bottom of them. We make names for ourselves instead of seeking the name that is above every name. And God, in His mercy, still confuses our languages — still disrupts our self-constructed empires — not to punish us, but to redirect us.

My friend, you cannot build your way to God. You cannot earn your way there, impress your way there, or hustle your way there. He comes down. That has always been His move. The Incarnation was not God waiting for humanity to reach the right floor. It was God stepping all the way down to meet us where we were. You don't have to build anything. Just open the door.

Identify one area where you've been striving for significance on your own terms. Lay it before God today and ask Him: "What are you trying to build in me instead of what I've been building for myself?"

Scripture Promise:

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." — James 4:10

Prayer:

Father, thank you for coming down to where we are. Thank you Jesus for the depths in which you went to save up. Thank you for then giving us your Holy Spirit to guide us in your way. Help us not focus on building, but to open our hearts to you. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
