We Cannot but Speak
"For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." (Acts 4:20, NKJV)
You're not the one on trial. You slipped in through a side door with the servants carrying water for the council, unnoticed enough that nobody's told you to leave yet. You weren't at the temple gate yesterday when it happened, but you heard about it before you even got to work this morning, the man who used to beg at the Beautiful Gate, walking, leaping, praising God loud enough to stop foot traffic in the courts.
Now you're standing against the back wall trying to look busy with nothing in particular, and the two men everyone's been talking about are standing in the middle of the room. Peter and John. Fishermen, from what you've heard. Nothing about either of them looks like it should be able to hold a room like this.
Annas and Caiaphas sit up front, the same faces you've seen preside over other trials, the ones that make grown men's voices shake before they even open their mouths. By what power, they ask. By what name did you do this?
You watch Peter's shoulders, waiting for them to fold the way shoulders usually do in this room. They don't. What comes out of his mouth doesn't sound like a fisherman talking. It sounds like a man who's spent a lifetime with scrolls instead of nets. It was the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. There is no other name under heaven by which anyone can be saved.
Nobody in the room moves for a second. You feel it even from where you're standing, tucked against the wall, a forgotten jug still in your hands. Something has walked into this room that has nothing to do with training or rank, and everyone here, including you, can feel the difference.
They order the men outside, threaten them, tell them plainly to stop speaking about Jesus. Peter's answer drifts back through the door before it shuts behind them, not loud, not performed for anyone's benefit. Just true. Whether it's right to listen to you rather than God, you decide. We cannot stop speaking about what we've seen and heard.
You go back to your water jug, back to your ordinary place along the wall. You didn't heal anyone today. You didn't stand trial. You only watched. And somehow watching was enough to leave something in you that wasn't there this morning.
You weren't the one on trial either, but something in this story still found you. What have you personally seen God do that you've gone quiet about because it felt safer to just watch? Speak it to someone today, plainly, the way Peter and John did.

Father, help me to be bold in telling other all that you've done for me; about Your goodness to me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
