Cut to the Heart
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38, NKJV)
Minutes ago you were one of the ones laughing, saying these Galileans had had too much wine. Now Peter is standing in front of the whole crowd, voice steady, and he isn't backing down from what just happened. He quotes the prophet Joel like he's been waiting his whole life to say these words out loud. Sons and daughters will prophesy. Young men will see visions. Peter continued to preach.
Then he stops circling and says the name straight out. Jesus of Nazareth. The one you watched get handed over, the one you maybe even shouted against. Peter says God raised Him up, that death could not keep hold of Him, that this same Jesus, whom you crucified, God has made both Lord and Christ.
That's the sentence that does it. Something in your chest opens up. The Scripture calls it being cut to the heart. You didn't come here looking to be undone, but here you are, along with thousands of others, asking the only question left. Men and brethren, what shall we do?
The answer isn't complicated. Repent. Be baptized. Receive what's being offered. By the end of the day, three thousand people who came to mock are washed in water they didn't expect to need.
If something in this story is cutting at your heart right now, don't talk yourself out of the feeling. Ask the same question the crowd asked, and let today be the day you answer it.
Scripture Promise:
“And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21, NKJV)
Prayer:
Father, thank you for raising Jesus from the dead. Lead us to experience your resurrection through baptism so that one day we will have the privilege of being a part of the first resurrection when Jesus comes. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
