What We Have Seen and Heard
“That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1:3, NKJV)
John had memories of Jesus that no one could take from him. He had heard His voice across crowded hillsides, watched His hands touch people others avoided, seen Him calm a storm with a word, and witnessed compassion move Him toward hurting people again and again. John had sat beside Him at the table, stood near Him at the cross, and later stared into the face of the Savior death could not hold.
Years have passed when John writes these words, yet one thing has not faded: Jesus is still the center of his life.
John does not write merely to preserve memories. He writes because he wants others to know the Christ he came to know. “That which we have seen and heard we declare to you.” Then he tells us why: so that we too can have fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
That is what makes his testimony so powerful. John had walked physically beside Jesus, but he understood that closeness to Christ was not reserved for twelve disciples on the roads of Galilee. Jesus came so that ordinary people in every generation could know God personally.
And that raises a question worth sitting with: Have we become satisfied with knowing about Jesus when He is inviting us to know Him?
It is possible to read about Christ without drawing near to Him. We can know His miracles, repeat His teachings, attend worship, and even serve in His name while our relationship with Him becomes hurried and distant.
John points us back to something deeper.
Christianity begins with Christ Himself.
Before John became an apostle, a preacher, or an elder of the church, he was a man who stayed close to Jesus. That closeness shaped everything that came afterward.
The same invitation is before us. Jesus is not asking us to admire Him from a distance. He is calling us into fellowship with Him. To sit with Him in His Word. To speak honestly with Him in prayer. To allow His presence to reach the places in us no one else sees.
Perhaps what our souls need most is not another answer from God, but more of God Himself.
Set aside a few quiet minutes today without beginning with your needs or requests. Ask Jesus simply, “Help me know You more deeply.” Then stay long enough to listen.
Scripture Promise:
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3, NKJV)
Prayer:
Father, thank you for the invitation to get to know you. Help me to accept it and honor the privilege every day. Father, let the results of me being with you be that others can see you in me. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
