Fire That Doesn't Burn
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4, NKJV)
You're sitting in the same room you've been sitting in for days, and the waiting has started to feel like its own kind of prayer. Then the sound comes. Not thunder. Not wind through a window. It is a rushing, roaring wind that fills the whole house, though nothing around you moves.
You look up and there's fire. Small tongues of it, resting over each head in the room, over yours too, and it doesn't burn. It settles. And before you can make sense of what that even means, words are coming out of your mouth that you never learned. Languages you couldn't have named an hour ago fall out of you as easily as your own.
Downstairs, the city is already gathering. Pilgrims from a dozen nations, in Jerusalem for the feast, stopping in the street because they hear their own language coming from the mouths of Galileans. Some are amazed. Some laugh it off. New wine, they say, that's all this is.
But you know what just happened in that room. Something opened in you that no water, no wine, nothing you could drink could open. God didn't wait for you to be ready. He filled the room you were already sitting in.
Don't wait for the perfect moment to ask for more of God. Ask Him to fill the room you're sitting in right now.
Scripture Promise:
“For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:39, NKJV)
Prayer:
Father, we thank you for what you did on the day of pentecost. You said that if we ask, you would freely give us your Holy Spirit, so I am asking that you fill us today, just as you did for those on the day of pentecost. And as a result may we share the gospel in love to those around us. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
