Contend for the Faith
“I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 1:3, NKJV)
Jude had something else he wanted to write about. Instead, the spiritual danger facing believers was serious enough that he changed direction.
Contend for the faith.
But Jude's words are not an invitation to become argumentative Christians. Before his letter ends, he tells believers to build themselves up in faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, remain in God's love, show compassion, and keep looking toward the mercy of Jesus Christ.
That tells us something about how truth is meant to be defended.
We do not protect the faith by becoming unlike the Savior at its center.
Jesus never needed cruelty to defend truth. He was uncompromising and compassionate, holy and approachable, courageous and full of grace. If our defense of Christianity causes people to see less of Christ in us, something has gone wrong.
Jude understood that the gospel was precious enough to protect because Jesus is precious enough to follow.
There are voices everywhere competing for our allegiance. The challenge is not merely to recognize error in the world around us, but to remain so rooted in Christ that we are not quietly pulled away from Him ourselves.
Before we contend outwardly, we must remain surrendered inwardly.
Ask God to deepen your roots in His Word and keep your heart anchored in Jesus. Stand firmly for truth today, but make sure the way you stand still looks like Christ.
Scripture Promise:
“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” (Jude 1:24)
Prayer:
Father, thank you for the beauty and simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Lord help me to keep your words in my heart and to firmly in them. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
