Grace Is Enough
“And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NKJV)
Paul had prayed about this before. Three times he pleaded with the Lord to remove the thorn that troubled him. This was a man who had watched prison doors open, witnessed miracles, survived persecution, and seen God intervene in impossible circumstances. Surely the Christ who had delivered him before could deliver him from this.
Jesus could.
But He didn't.
Instead, Christ answered Paul with something he would carry for the rest of his journey: “My grace is sufficient for you.”
Paul wanted the weakness removed. Jesus promised to meet him inside it.
There are moments when following Christ means trusting Him with an answer we would not have chosen. We pray for God to change the circumstance, heal the wound, open the door, remove the burden, or end the struggle. Sometimes He does. Sometimes His answer is, “My grace is sufficient.”
That does not mean Jesus is indifferent to our pain. Calvary forever settles that question. The Savior who bore our grief and carried our sorrows understands suffering from the inside. Sometimes He reveals His power by taking us out of the difficulty. Other times He reveals it by becoming our strength within it.
Paul eventually stopped measuring God's faithfulness by whether the thorn disappeared. He began measuring everything by the sufficiency of Christ.
Perhaps that is the deeper question: If Jesus does not change this yet, can He still be enough for me here?
Paul discovered that He could.
Bring the thing you have repeatedly asked God to change back to Jesus today. Ask for His intervention, but also ask for the grace to trust Him if His answer looks different from yours.
Scripture Promise:
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, NKJV)
Prayer:
Father, help us to be content when you choose not to remove the thorn. Help us to trust that your way is the best way even when we can't see it. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
