Singing in the Stocks
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."

The pain was real. Your back bore the marks of the rods, your feet were locked in wooden stocks, and the darkness of the inner prison offered little hope that morning would bring anything different. From every human perspective, Paul and Silas had every reason to question why God had allowed them to suffer for faithfully preaching the gospel. Yet, as midnight settled over the prison, they did something that defied every expectation. They prayed, and they sang hymns to God. Their worship was not rooted in comfortable circumstances but in an unchanging Savior. Though their bodies were confined, their hearts remained free because nothing in that prison could separate them from Christ.
God answered in a way no one could have anticipated. The earth shook, the prison doors flew open, and every chain fell away. It would be easy to conclude that the earthquake was the miracle, but Luke quickly redirects our attention to something far greater. A frightened jailer, convinced that all was lost, rushed into the prison trembling and asked the most important question a person could ever ask: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" In that moment, the suffering of Paul and Silas became the pathway through which another soul was introduced to Jesus.
The answer they gave was remarkably simple: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." They did not point the jailer to their faithfulness, their endurance, or even the miracle he had just witnessed. They pointed him to Christ. The earthquake may have opened the prison doors, but only Jesus could open the door to eternal life. The chains that bound the prisoners had fallen away, yet the greater bondage was the sin that held the jailer captive. Christ came to break those chains as well.
How often do we ask God to remove us from difficult circumstances, while He desires to reveal Himself through them? We naturally pray for the prison doors to open, but sometimes God is accomplishing something even greater than our immediate deliverance. He is revealing His Son to watching hearts. The greatest testimony of that night was not that two prisoners were set free, but that an entire household came to know the Savior.
Perhaps you are carrying burdens that feel like chains today. They may be fear, disappointment, grief, guilt, or uncertainty about the future. Jesus does not always remove every hardship the moment we ask, but He always offers something greater—His presence, His peace, and the promise of eternal life. The same Lord who met a jailer in the middle of the night still meets people in their darkest moments, inviting them to place their faith in Him. When Christ becomes our hope, no prison is strong enough to keep us from the freedom only He can give.
Bring your burdens to Jesus today. Instead of asking only for changed circumstances, ask Him to reveal Himself more fully through them. Then look for opportunities to point others to Christ, remembering that He often uses our greatest trials to display His greatest grace.

Father, when my circumstance are not as I desire them to be, help me to remember to look up and praise you anyway. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
