A Light You Didn't Ask For
"And he said, 'Who are You, Lord?' Then the Lord said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.'" — Acts 9:5 (NKJV)
You've got letters in your bag giving you authority to drag believers out of Damascus in chains. Every step of the journey strengthens your resolve because you're convinced you're defending God. As far as you're concerned, you're on the right side.
Then a light brighter than the midday sun surrounds you. Before you can steady yourself, you're on the ground. A voice breaks through the silence. "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" Before you can answer, you already know this moment will change everything.
"Who are You, Lord?" The answer comes with both truth and mercy. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting."
For three days, darkness becomes your companion. The man who thought he saw so clearly can no longer see at all. The confidence that once fueled your mission has been replaced by silence, reflection, and dependence. Then, to your complete amazement, Jesus sends Ananias, the disciple you had intended to arrest. Though fearful, Ananias obeys. He places his hands on you, calls you "Brother Saul." At that moment, something like scales falls from your eyes. Your sight returns, but more importantly, your heart is changed.
The greatest miracle on the Damascus road that day wasn't that a blind man could see again. It was that a sinner encountered the Savior.
That is the beauty of the gospel. Jesus didn't wait for Saul to become worthy of grace before extending it. He met him while he was still His enemy. The same Christ who confronted Saul also loved him enough to forgive him, restore him, and give his life a completely new purpose.
Perhaps you've been walking a road that has taken you farther from Christ than you ever intended. Maybe pride, regret, bitterness, or self-reliance has convinced you that turning back is impossible. Yet the cross declares otherwise. Jesus still steps into lives headed in the wrong direction. He still calls people by name. He still forgives completely. And He still transforms those who surrender to Him.
No one is beyond the reach of His grace because no one is beyond the reach of His love.
Bring every part of your life to Jesus today, even the parts you're tempted to hide. Ask Him to reveal anything that is keeping you from fully following Him, and trust Him to lead you into the new life only He can give.

Father, like Saul, open my eyes so that I may see the way in which you have called me to walk. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
