A Road With Nobody On It But You
“Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him.” (Acts 8:35, NKJV)
Imagine this, an angel tells you to get up and go south, down a desert road, and that's the whole instruction. There is no explanation of who you'll meet or why. But you go anyway.
A chariot comes into view, and in it a man of some importance, an official from the Ethiopian queen's court, reading out loud from the scroll of Isaiah as he rides. The Spirit tells you to go join him, so you run alongside and ask the question that opens everything. Do you understand what you're reading?
How can I, he says, unless someone guides me. You sense he's been carrying this Scripture a long way, turning the same words over without anyone to unlock them for him. The passage he's stuck on is the one about a lamb led to slaughter, silent, its life taken from the earth. He wants to know who the prophet is talking about. Himself? Someone else?
Then you open your mouth and start where he is, right there in that verse, and preach Jesus to him. By the time you reach some water on the road, he's asking to be baptized right then, no waiting, no formal instruction, just a heart that's finally found what it's been missing.
You baptize him, and the Spirit pulls you away as suddenly as He sent you. The man goes on his way rejoicing. He would be carrying something back to his country that a road you almost questioned was built to deliver.
As I read this Bible story, what stays with me is how ordinary that road must have looked before anything happened on it. There no recording of any signs that said this is where someone finds what they've been searching for. It just looked like a stretch of desert most people wouldn't choose to walk. I'm reminded how God hides the most important conversations of your life inside the most unremarkable moments, if you're willing to actually show up for the nudge instead of arguing yourself out of it.
Ask God to make you willing, not just available, for whatever unremarkable moment He might be about to use today.

Father, make me willing to do your will and not my own. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
