Is God Really There, and How Can I Know Him Personally?
THE GOD YOU CANNOT SEE
Have you ever looked into the night sky and wondered whether someone is really listening? You may have prayed and waited for an answer, hoping for some unmistakable sign that God heard you. Perhaps you've listened to others speak confidently about their relationship with Him while wondering why you haven't experienced the same thing. How do you build a relationship with someone you cannot see, touch, or hear in the way you experience other relationships?
You're asking a question that even some of Jesus' closest followers struggled with. Thomas had walked with Jesus, heard His teachings, and witnessed His miracles. Yet after the crucifixion, when the other disciples told him Jesus was alive, Thomas wanted evidence for himself. Jesus met Thomas in his uncertainty and invited him to examine the evidence of His resurrection. Rather than turning away from a questioning disciple, Jesus gave him an opportunity to believe.
God understands that we are human. He knows our limitations and our desire for something we can recognize and understand. That's one reason the life of Jesus is so important. When humanity struggled to understand the invisible God, Jesus came into our

world and revealed Him through a life we could see. He touched lepers, welcomed children, forgave sinners, defended the vulnerable, and showed compassion to people others had overlooked. Every act of love revealed something about the Father.
Jesus said in John 14:9, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father." If you want to discover what God is like, begin by getting to know Jesus. Read the Gospels and pay attention to the people He encountered. Notice how He treated those who doubted, failed, suffered, or had been rejected. As you discover His character, you'll begin to understand the heart of the God you are searching for.
Knowing God is a relationship that grows through time spent with Him. Prayer gives you an opportunity to speak openly with Him. Scripture helps you recognize His character and understand His will. The Holy Spirit works in your heart, helping you grow in faith and understanding. You may not experience God in the dramatic way you expected, but you can begin discovering His presence in the quiet, everyday moments of a life turned toward Him.
